Avoid

Just as important as picking the right places, is knowing where to avoid!  Few things bother me more than checking in to a hotel and finding out (usually quickly) that isn’t really what it is billed to be.

Indeed, many properties/destinations that bill themselves as high end simply are products of their marketing departments’ creative imagination.  Some of the situations that frustrate the most are come about when a luxury brand that you know and trust allows a sub-standard property to keep their flag.

Sometimes, properties are able to come off of the list if they undergo a metamorphasis change (like the Plaza in New York).

These are my thoughts on places best avoided.  Thanksfully, through a combination of research, intuition and luck, I’ve not found myself at properties like these too often.  Your thoughts, comments and suggestions are very welcome.  (Unless noted otherwise, I’ve had first hand experience at each of these properties.)

North America

  • Fairmont – Toronto
Without question, this is the worst Fairmont in the system.  I understand the owners of the property (Fairmont is the manager, not the owner) have declined to put any capital expenditures into the property.  While it is in a perfect location, the inside has fallen to shambles.  This is a 2-star property, at best, and is in no way worthy of the Fairmont flag.  I understand that Fairmont has continued to manage the property so that this excellent location won’t end up flagged by a competitor…but that strategy is not without significant cost to their brand!

  • Renaissance – Cleveland
This is the “grande dame” property in Cleveland.  Sadly, the old lady’s owners ran out of money probably 40 years ago.  It is billed as 4-star, but due to both quality of service and fit and finish, should be in the 2-star ranks.  The Ritz Carlton – Cleveland, though not a stellar Ritz, is usually within $50 of price – and is infinitely better.  The two hotels are connected and part of the same broader indoor complex.  If you are looking to save money, use Hotwire.com and book a 4-star; this will give you the nearby Hyatt for $55 or so.  (Not a great hotel itself, but not bad – and if you’re shopping by price, this is the best QPR in Cleveland.)
  • Ritz Carlton – San Juan
This may be the worst Ritz Carlton in the system.
  • Ritz Carlton – St. Thomas
  • Ritz Carlton – Jamaica
